START Project by Daniel Grumiller

"Black Holes in AdS, the Universe, and Analog Systems"

APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR POSTDOC APPLICATIONS: DECEMBER 9, 2013
APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE SENT TO SYLVIA RIEDLER
INSPIRE HEP JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The main purpose of this project is a comprehensive study of black hole physics from a theoretic perspective, including the investigation of the impact that Black Holes have in disciplines other than general relativity.

The project started in August 2009 and is scheduled to run for six years.
Follow up projects beyond Summer 2015 will be pursued.

Current group members are:

  • Pascal Anastasopoulos (post-doc, Lise-Meitner fellow)
  • Arjun Bagchi (post-doc, Lise-Meitner fellow)
  • Michael Gary (post-doc)
  • Florian Preis (post-doc)
  • Jan Rosseel (post-doc)
  • Stefan Stricker (post-doc)
  • Maria Irakleidou (PhD student)
  • Iva Lovrekovic (PhD student)
  • Max Riegler (PhD student)
  • Maria Schimpf (PhD student)
and a couple of undergraduate students, national and international collaborators.

Here is a list of possible research topics envisaged in the research proposal

  • Black holes in lower dimensions (two and particularly three)
  • Black holes in AdS
  • Black hole analogs
  • Black holes in modified theories of gravity
  • Black holes in astrophysics
  • Black hole formation in numerical simulations
Applicants are encouraged to suggest alternative research topics as long as they fit reasonably into the overall theme of theoretical black hole physics.

Due to the current research interests of my group, applicants with experience/interest in three-dimensional gravity, higher spin gravity, non-AdS (in particular flat space) holography or numerical simulations in AdS and/or large D gravity might be favoured.

Candidates should have a strong background in one or more of the following fields: general relativity, string theory, AdS/CFT, higher-spin gravity, numerical relativity, astrophysics, lower-dimensional gravity, quantum-information aspects of black holes.

Applicants should submit a CV, brief statement of research interests, a list of publications, and at least three letters of recommendation to be sent to:

   Sylvia Riedler <sylvia.riedler@tuwien.ac.at>

Applications submitted until December 9, 2013 will receive full attention. The initial appointment will be for two years, with a third year subject to mutual agreement.

Location: Institute for Theoretical Physics, Vienna University of Technology

Duration: 2+1 years (negotiable)

Start: September 2014 (negotiable)

Salary (pre-tax): 61.200 Euro/year (non-negotiable) + travel allowance
